Strong, driven, and biddable, Vizslas are treasured dogs both in the show ring and in the hunting field. This breed combines the best traits of pointers and hunters in a robust but lithe frame. While they're avid hunters, what Vizslas want most in the whole world is to be by your side as much as possible.

Originally from Hungary, this medium-sized and high-energy breed can grow to between 45-65 pounds and lives an average of 10-14 years. The breed is recognized by the American Kennel Club and classified as a member of the Sporting group.

BEHAVIOR & TRAINING

WHAT IS A VIZSLA'S PERSONALITY LIKE?

Vizslas are SO EXCITED about everyone and everything. They are attentive, affectionate family members who are playful but gentle with children. That said, it's still always best to supervise any dog with children. This breed can be protective, but generally speaking is happy to meet strangers on two legs or four.

WHAT IS VIZSLA BEHAVIOR LIKE?

This is a very active breed. These dogs would love to be your daily running or jogging partners. Find some way to channel this dog's boundless energy or she will make her own fun. (Your Vizsla's idea of a good time might involve excavating your rose bushes and feasting on your couch. It'll be easier, cheaper, and way more fun to just take her running with you.)

Vizslas are a gentle breed. They make alert but calm housedogs as long as you make sure they've gotten enough exercise. Games are a great way to both stimulate their active minds and exhaust their busy bodies. Vizslas are particularly good at memory games.

HOW EASY IS IT TO TRAIN A VIZSLA?

Vizslas are quick learners and people-pleasers; they're a biddable breed that responds well to training. They also lose their focus quickly, though, so keep training sessions short and fun. Be patient, gentle, and consistent with your furry friend. Reward good behaviors with affection, praise, and treats.

CARE & HEALTH

HOW MUCH DO VIZSLAS SHED AND WHAT ARE THEIR GROOMING NEEDS?

Their short, sleek coats are relatively easy keepers. As such, Vizslas have very few grooming requirements. Plan for weekly brushings. They don't have much of a doggy odor, so bathe only as needed. This breed is an average, seasonal shedder.

WHAT HEALTH PROBLEMS DO VIZSLAS HAVE?

As a breed, Vizlas are generally healthy. Some are susceptible to eye disease, autoimmune disorders, or hip dysplasia.
