The English Springer Spaniel is legendary: one of these dogs went into battle alongside the Scottish knight William Wallace. Bred to flush, retrieve, and point game, these dogs got their name because they could “spring” game out of hiding spots. Not only is it the oldest breed of spaniel but it is also the fastest.
English Springer Spaniels are very driven workers, valued as gun dogs and companions alike.
Originally from England, this medium-sized and medium-energy breed can grow to between 40-50 pounds and lives an average of 10-14 years. The breed is recognized by the American Kennel Club and classified as a member of the Sporting group.

WHAT IS AN ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL'S PERSONALITY LIKE?
English Springer Spaniels are happy dogs, loyal and eager to please. They love being part of a family.
This breed is very affectionate and playful. They are usually friendly toward children, other dogs, and pets. They're happy to meet strangers and generally prefer to be around people as much as possible.
WHAT IS ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL BEHAVIOR LIKE?
These are energetic, hardworking, tough, and enduring dogs. English Springer Spaniels are smart and steadfast. This breed needs room to stretch its legs, so plan on vigorous daily exercise. They have good recall when trained well and are enthusiastic swimmers and retrievers. They can be somewhat prone to barking.
HOW EASY IS IT TO TRAIN AN ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL?
English Springer Spaniels are obedient people-pleasers who are often easy to train. They can be somewhat distractible, however. This dog loves complex games and problem solving and responds well to food rewards.
If you want them to be around children, be sure to socialize your English Springer Spaniel early and (as with any dog) be sure to supervise.

HOW MUCH DO ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIELS SHED AND WHAT ARE THEIR GROOMING NEEDS?
The Bench type has a darker, longer coat; the Field variety's shorter coat is of lighter color. This breed's feathered coat is double-layered, protecting the English Springer Spaniel from weather, water, and thorns.
If your English Springer Spaniel is a Bench or show dog, it'll need professional grooming at least twice a year. The Field variety is an easy keeper; their coats are resistant to dirt. Brush regularly and be sure to keep their ears clean to avoid infection.
English Springer Spaniels are moderate, seasonal shedders.
WHAT HEALTH PROBLEMS DO ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIELS HAVE?
English Springer Spaniels are generally a healthy breed. These dogs can be prone to hip dysplasia and eye ailments. They're also prone to pudginess, so be mindful about meals and snacks.
