BEHAVIOR & TRAINING
WHAT IS AN AUSTRALIAN TERRIER'S PERSONALITY LIKE?
This is a very smart, somewhat energetic, and affectionate breed. They can be playful, and they're good with children. Australian Terriers are fairly friendly with other dogs and pets but often shy with strangers. They're outgoing companions who thrive in the company of their people.
WHAT IS AUSTRALIAN TERRIER BEHAVIOR LIKE?
Australian Terriers are vigilant watchdogs, though not inclined to be protective. You might want to keep an eye on this dog in the backyard — they do enjoy digging and chasing any furry thing foolish enough to skitter into their territory. They then love to tell the neighborhood about their exploits: they're somewhat prone to barking.
Daily exercise should satisfy their inquisitive minds and moderate exercise needs. A good romp in the yard or trip to the dog park will do the trick.
HOW EASY IS IT TO TRAIN AN AUSTRALIAN TERRIER?
Australian Terriers are people-pleasers and quick learners, making them exceptionally responsive and easy to train. Consider daily training sessions to keep your Australian Terrier's mind active.
CARE & HEALTH
HOW MUCH DO AUSTRALIAN TERRIERS SHED AND WHAT ARE THEIR GROOMING NEEDS?
An Australian Terrier's hair is designed to withstand the weather. Its undercoat is short and soft; its outer coat is straight and harsh, usually about 3 inches long.
They don't require much fuss; their short coats resist matting and makes dirt and mud easy to shake off. They don't shed much and won't require frequent trips to the groomers.
WHAT HEALTH PROBLEMS DO AUSTRALIAN TERRIERS HAVE?
Most Australian Terriers don't require much in the way of medical treatment, either. Dogs their size can sometimes experience luxating kneecaps or hip-joint malformations. Some Australian Terriers develop digestive or skin allergies, diabetes, or immune deficiencies, but these problems are rare.
