English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is legendary: one of these dogs went into battle alongside the Scottish knight William Wallace. Bred to flush, retrieve, and point game, these dogs got their name because they could “spring” game out of hiding spots. Not only is it the oldest breed of spaniel but it is also the fastest.

English Springer Spaniels are very driven workers, valued as gun dogs and companions alike.

Originally from England, this medium-sized and medium-energy breed can grow to between 40-50 pounds and lives an average of 10-14 years. The breed is recognized by the American Kennel Club and classified as a member of the Sporting group.

CARE & HEALTH

HOW MUCH DO ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIELS SHED AND WHAT ARE THEIR GROOMING NEEDS?

The Bench type has a darker, longer coat; the Field variety's shorter coat is of lighter color. This breed's feathered coat is double-layered, protecting the English Springer Spaniel from weather, water, and thorns.

If your English Springer Spaniel is a Bench or show dog, it'll need professional grooming at least twice a year. The Field variety is an easy keeper; their coats are resistant to dirt. Brush regularly and be sure to keep their ears clean to avoid infection.

English Springer Spaniels are moderate, seasonal shedders.
